THE TRANSPARENT ACOUSTIC SHELL FOR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR
Padua (Italy) in the forefront for Acoustics in symphonic
music
Not only opera-houses but also, and above all, churches
have acoustic problems that make listening to performances
of classical music very difficult: dispersion, distortion,
echo and reverberation are unfortunately very common phenomena
in churches.
SUONOVIVO Srl of Padua, the first and only Natural
Acoustics Service for classical music in Italy and Europe,
has created a large Acoustic Shell in Lexan transparent
polycarbonate, surmounted by a special canopy: an absolute
novelty, given that wooden panels are normally used in opera-houses.
This project respects both the sonority of the music and
the sacredness of the place because special structures and
materials that are visually unobtrusive or inspired by traditional
liturgical elements, have been studied.
The results are impressive, both in technical/acoustic
and aesthetic terms: the transparent walls effectively convey
the sound towards the audience, focusing it, without the
use of inopportune visual barriers; a large sail canopy
in special blue-grey high-density velvet rises above the
orchestra, creating an attractive sky effect and, above
all, softening the din of brass instruments and timpani
as well as the excess sound.
And all this while protecting the players at the same time.
The project, which is highly innovative as a specific acoustic
solution for concerts in churches, was also prepared thanks
to the attentive awareness and availability of organisations
and institutions towards the problems and needs of classical
music, for everyone.
